Q&A Would you consider out-sourcing your products?
Hi everyone, welcome welcome
Today's question is would I consider out-sourcing my products?
I'll be taking this question two ways: Would I consider out-sourcing ALL of my products?
No. I love the fact that every stitch is made in house, that I get to touch and be a part of the process that brings my products to you as a client and customer.
Would I consider out-sourcing SOME of my products?
Yes, and I've actually been looking into exactly that recently. I've been wanting to make my own stickers for a few years now. Last year I even bought a Silhouette Cameo and had a blast using it to cut out some laminated stickers.
I had been looking into getting those stickers made by a sticker company. It's not something I'll be jumping into right away as a newbie to the world of sticker making and design, but it is in the back of my mind as an option one day. I've also thought of it for making prints of my artwork as well, however I have not gotten around to test that out at home yet.
If the demand is there for stickers with my artwork and I find myself in a situation where I am no longer able to keep up with this demand. If I become overwhelmed with the quantity I would have to make to fulfil the amount of product I'd be moving. I would move towards placing an order with a sticker manufacturer.
It would be important to me to do research on which company I go with. Firstly, I would like the company to be Canadian, as I a Canadian based small business and I want to support my own.
I wouldn't mind spending the little bit extra to have that perk.
I'd also want to make sure that they are a quality source, I know that this will most likely end up being a game of word of mouth when it comes to reading the product reviews. Or it might also be trial and error, I might stumble upon one company, make and order, and then make another with a different company to try them out as well.
Maybe I might like one better for one type or product and another for a different one.
It's something I'll have to see when I get there.
It could also be really useful if I want to make stickers with a cool effect, like holographic stickers. Maybe I won't be able to find a laminate sheet that I like or that I find easy to use and a manufacture will be the best for that kind of product.
In the end, it will still be mine, my artwork, my creation. I view out-sourcing as just outside help in making the quantities needed for certain things. Like stickers and art prints.
When it comes to something like sewing of my tote bags, lanyards and scrunchies etc... I lean more towards no.
If I get to a point where I cannot keep up with the demand of a certain sewn product, I can most likely rally my partner into helping me. My sewing machines aren't hard to use and they have been something that interests him since the first day I showed them to him. Even if he doesn't sewn and simply helps with little prep work things like he has in the past, it will help me more than you'd expect. It stream line's the process and allows me to work better.
Have considered out-sourcing your products, do you out-source products currently? Either way, tell me about down below in the comments. I always like hearing about what everyone else is doing and your own experiences.
If you aren't a small business owner, how do you view out-sourcing?
I can't wait to read the comments, until next time,
